| Venice was our first stop. The city is built on 117 small islands and has some 150 canals and 409 bridges (only three of which cross the Grand Canal).The historic centre is divided into six sestieri (quarters): San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Castello. In central Venice the population is 63000. There are hundreds of small streets that you can get lost in. So we were glad we got us a map before we went sightseeing. The water in Venice is now so polluted, because of the dikes built to prevent the sinking of the city, that it is not possible to bath there. Sad... |
